Surah Al Mutaffifin
Translation by:
Dr. Mustafa Khattab, the Clear Quran
-
Wailul lil-muṭaffifīn(a).
Woe to the defrauders!
-
Allażīna iżaktālū ‘alan-nāsi yastaufūn(a).
Those who take full measure ˹when they buy˺ from people,
-
Wa iżā kālūhum au wazanūhum yukhsirūn(a).
but give less when they measure or weigh for buyers.
-
Alā yaẓunnu ulā'ika annahum mab‘ūṡūn(a).
Do such people not think that they will be resurrected
-
Liyaumin ‘aẓīm(in).
for a tremendous Day—
-
Yauma yaqūmun-nāsu lirabbil-‘ālamīn(a).
the Day ˹all˺ people will stand before the Lord of all worlds?
-
Kallā inna kitābal-fujjāri lafī sijjīn(in).
But no! The wicked are certainly bound for Sijjîn ˹in the depths of Hell˺—
-
Wa mā adrāka mā sijjīn(un).
and what will make you realize what Sijjîn is?—
-
Kitābum marqūm(un).
a fate ˹already˺ sealed.
-
Wailuy yauma'iżil lil-mukażżibīn(a).
Woe on that Day to the deniers—
-
Allażīna yukażżibūna biyaumid-dīn(i).
those who deny Judgment Day!
-
Wa mā yukażżibu bihī illā kullu mu‘tadin aṡīm(in).
None would deny it except every evildoing transgressor.
-
Iżā tutlā ‘alaihi āyātunā qāla asāṭīrul-awwalīn(a).
Whenever Our revelations are recited to them, they say, “Ancient fables!”
-
Kallā bal…rāna ‘alā qulūbihim mā kānū yaksibūn(a).
But no! In fact, their hearts have been stained by all ˹the evil˺ they used to commit!
-
Kallā innahum ‘ar rabbihim yauma'iżil lamaḥjūbūn(a).
Undoubtedly, they will be sealed off from their Lord on that Day.
-
Ṡumma innahum laṣālul-jaḥīm(i).
Moreover, they will surely burn in Hell,
-
Ṡumma yuqālu hāżal-lażī kuntum bihī tukażżibūn(a).
and be told, “This is what you used to deny.”
-
Kallā inna kitābal-abrāri lafī ‘illiyyīn(a).
But no! The virtuous are certainly bound for ’Illiyûn ˹in elevated Gardens˺—
-
Wa mā adrāka mā ‘illiyyūn(a).
and what will make you realize what ’Illiyûn is?—
-
Kitābum marqūm(un).
a fate ˹already˺ sealed,
-
Yasyhaduhul-muqarrabūn(a).
witnessed by those nearest ˹to Allah˺.
-
Innal-abrāra lafī na‘īm(in).
Surely the virtuous will be in bliss,
-
‘Alal-arā'iki yanẓurūn(a).
˹seated˺ on ˹canopied˺ couches, gazing around.
-
Ta‘rifu fī wujūhihim naḍratan na‘īm(i).
You will recognize on their faces the glow of delight.
-
Yusqauna mir raḥīqim makhtūm(in).
They will be given a drink of sealed, pure wine,
-
Khitāmuhū misk(un), wa fī żālika falyatanāfasil-mutanāfisūn(a).
whose last sip will smell like musk. So let whoever aspires to this strive ˹diligently˺.
-
Wa mizājuhū min tasnīm(in).
And this drink’s flavour will come from Tasnîm—
-
‘Ainay yasyrabu bihal-muqarrabūn(a).
a spring from which those nearest ˹to Allah˺ will drink.
-
Innal-lażīna ajramū kānū minal-lażīna āmanū yaḍḥakūn(a).
Indeed, the wicked used to laugh at the believers,
-
Wa iżā marrū bihim yatagāmazūn(a).
wink to one another whenever they passed by,
-
Wa iżanqalabū ilā ahlihimunqalabū fakihīn(a).
and muse ˹over these exploits˺ upon returning to their own people.
-
Wa iżā ra'auhum qālū inna hā'ulā'i laḍāllūn(a).
And when they saw the faithful, they would say, “These ˹people˺ are truly astray,”
-
Wa mā ursilū ‘alaihim ḥāfiẓīn(a).
even though they were not sent as keepers over the believers.
-
Fal-yaumal-lażīna āmanū minal kuffāri yaḍḥakūn(a).
But on that Day the believers will be laughing at the disbelievers,
-
‘Alal-arā'iki yanẓurūn(a).
as they sit on ˹canopied˺ couches, looking on.
-
Hal ṡuwwibal-kuffāru mā kānū yaf‘alūn(a).
˹The believers will be asked,˺ “Have the disbelievers ˹not˺ been paid back for what they used to do?”
